Beautiful Bach for a summer's evening
    Kate Semmens, Steven Devine
    Asylum, Peckham London SE15 2SQ
    United Kingdom

Kate Semmens (soprano) and Steven Devine (harpsichord) perform beautiful domestic music by J S Bach including gems from the Anna Magdalena notebooks.

In 1725 Johann Sebastian Bach was two years into his post as kappelmeister in Leipzig and had been married to his second wife, Anna Magdalena, for four years. Anna Magdalena was the daughter of J C Wilcke, court and field trumpeter at Weissenfels, and a fine singer in her own right. Her outstanding musical skills made her of huge assistance to her husband, participating in music-making and helping him copy out parts for performance. Two collections of music survive in her hand designed for her private music-making, the second of which is dated 1725 and forms the backbone of tonight’s concert.

This programme offers a glimpse into domestic music-making in the Bach household: a suite (which later became a French Suite) and other keyboard items – some by J S Bach, some by other composers – and some of the beautiful vocal items, including the famous Bist du bei mir and Schlummert ein. There are also a couple items from their children that were written expressly for domestic performance.
