Schoenberg' s The Book of Hanging Gardens, 15 part song cycle, sung by Signe Asmussen (soprano) and accompanied by Peter Hill (piano) was put on yesterday at Sheffield University's Drama studio. The stage, here shared with the props for the evening's play: 3 beds and bedroom, in a state of student abandonment, was soon demoted to the background when the music charged us with the inner world of the modern Art Song. The outer world crept up on me though as I was trapped clapping at a feint end  apologies, I shall have to do some penance in my reading up on Stefan George's poems, I guess, or at least getting to know the work further.

Not trapped clapping yesterday ... George Parsons played a short set of baroque harpsichord pieces ... a pleasant instrument played competently. Can't imagine anyone fretted over the Scarlatti sonata's missed applause (more than my party).

Sorry, I must be a bit thick. I don't see the point of these posts.

Presumably you enjoyed Schonberg and Scarlatti - don't understand the "trapped clapping".

The harpsichord played well is a magnificent engine of pleasure.
I am working through the Scott Ross set of Scarlatti - a monumental accomplishment.

The harpsichord goes a long way in a harpsichord recital.
